The Wisdom Of Age is a wonderful publication harnessing the life experiences of over 50 residents of the Dean Maxwell Home in Roscrea. The stories in the book were collected and beautifully retold by author, Mary Arrigan. The photos, which are full of character and charm, were shot by renowned photographer, Brian Redmond, over a 20 year period.
The Brief:
Graphic Index were invited to join this project to thread together this magical collection of words and images and create a design that would display the content in all it’s glory. The aim was to design a book that would have a universal appeal.
What We Did:
We met with the Dean Maxwell Home, the author and photographer to establish everyone’s expectations. We viewed the images and read a selection of the stories to get a feel for the tone and energy of the book. We consulted with the printer to agree the practical and economic factors. We then worked on chosing a cover image and a title for the book. Once these were decided upon we proceeded to layout and design each page as an individual artwork within a basic design template and specifications. We considered the broad age profile of the target audience when deciding upon font, point size and colours. Great care was taken to create a book that is impressive in it’s size, production quality and design details; all of which was necessary to honestly portray the depth of character of the writing and images.
